Men's Ministry Annual Day:Old and New Members Reunite for an outstanding presentation of songs

Sunday, December 2, 2012

The Men's Ministry celebrated their *39th Annual Day at Warner Baptist today.

Members of the current men chorus combined with some of the former members to render an outstanding slate of songs and music.

Their selections included some good old hymns that we rarely hear in church today. It was truly " foot stumping, hand slapping time" in there this afternoon.

Their selections included: (1) Blessed Assurance (congregation), (2) The Last Mile of the Way, (Earl Adams), (3) Just ask for what you want, (Stan Bradby), (4) It's Amazing (Lenny Wright), (5) Oh, Holy Night, (instrumental by Gary Walker,), (6) I'm Redeemed (Frank White) (7) My Life is in his Hand ( George Guthrie, Frank White, and Lenny Wright) and (8) Roll back the curtains (Frank).

The worship leader was Deacon Larry Johnson, a member of Christian Way Baptist Church in Falls Church. He did a wonderful job of helping keep the congregation in a hallelujah mode.

Some of the old chorus members who returned were: Mark Ball, Elmore Ball, Frank White, Lenny Wright, George Guthrie, Marvin Somers, and Dejaun Saunders.

The following men were in the chorus today: Mark, Keith, Laurence, Lloyd, Dejaun, Burton, Lenny, Gary, Stan, George (Butch), E. Ball, Guy, Lewis, Earl, Pliney, Marvin,  and Barry.

The musicians were: Charlene Purdy, Shirley Saunders and Shirley Jones.

The choir was formed in 1973 (my timeline),.  Some of the original members were: Eugene Puryear, Grady Bryant Sr, Lloyd Saunders, Herbert Fuller, Jr and Chester Pearson.

Chester Pearson was the choir's first president and his wife Leola was the the first musician.

Barry Goode gave a more detailed history of the men's ministry.

Pliney Britford and Barry Goode are the President and Vice President, respectively, of the men's ministry.

*The year is unconfirmed. But 1973 seems more positive to me.

Neabsco Baptist Church Ensemble provided the music for the Young & Adult Choir Annual Day on October 7, 2012.

Young and Adult Choir Annual Day

The Young & Adult Ministry, including the choir, celebrated its 37th year on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at the church.

The special guest for the service was the Neabsco Baptist Church Ensemble Choir from Woodbridge, VA.
The choir rendered a very good selection of inspiring and soul uplifting songs. The congregation was very lively throughout the presentation.

Their selection of songs included (1) He Reigns Forever, (2) Holy, Holy and (3) How Great Is Our God. The choir, under the direction of  Sister Linda Lindsey, had about 22 members present.

The Worship Leader for the service was Brother George K. Davis, a former member of Warner Baptist.

The Young and Adult Ministry was organized in 1974 as the Young Adult Club (YAC). The first president was Michael Fuller and vice-president Ceola Dickson.  The original choir had about 20 members.  Initially, only church members, ages 19 to 42 years old, could sing in the choir. Subsequently, the name was changed to the Young Adult Ministry and the choir's name was changed to Young and Adult Choir.

Initially, we had about 20 members in the YAC.  Most of us sung in the choir. We had a very good music teacher from D. C. (her name is?).

Some of the initial  or early members of the YAC were:  Michael Fuller, Eddie Dixon and his wife; Mr. Gibbs and his wife; Lloyd and Shirley Saunders; Charles Oliver; Marjorie Davis; Regina Crawley; Charlene Purdy, Herbert Fuller, Jr.; Stephonia (Catheleen) Moore; Grady Bryant, Sr. and others to be named later.

Sister Hattie Turner is the current choir president.

A very good meal was prepared by the Culinary Ministry for the occasion.

Homecoming Day was a joyous day at Warner Baptist today, July 8, 2012

The morning worship service featured a sermon by the pastor, using John 16: 9 for scripture.  The text was "What did you bring to the celebration?"

The Mass Choir provided the music. Carolyn Curseen presented a reflection pertaining to the history of Warner Baptist.

Right hand of fellowship was extended to Izara Saunders and Anthony Smith. Izara was baptized on Sunday, July 1 and Anthony restored his membership.

After morning service, several members of the congregation gathered in the fellowship hall to enjoy a good down home meal prepared by the Culinary Ministry.  The meal included good old fashion collard greens; fried & baked chicken; and pies & cakes.

The Culinary Ministry director is Shirley Saunders and I will name other members of this distinct ministry later. Each person on the serving line, greeted everyone who came through the line with a special smile.

During the fellowship period, members and friends talked about the good old days.

I was seated at the table with Bernard Fuller, Keith Turner, Mary Walker and several others. We exchanged stories about a variety of subjects. Bernard drove from Richmond ( about 100 miles) for this occasion.

In the afternoon service, Reverend William Swann, pastor of First Ashville Baptist Church in Marshall, VA delivered the sermon. His scripture was from the book of Acts. His text was "When Paul Joined the Church."

The First Ashville Baptist Choir sung some beautiful old hymns that touched the soul in a special manner.

Deacon Lewis, just turned 90 in June, sung "I want Jesus to walk with me". In his testimony he told about how Jesus has continued to be with him since the loss of his wife 14 years ago.

Rick Ellerbie served as the worship leader.

When everything was over at the church today,  I locked the  door, I could say, with  joy, "the preaching and singing were spirit filled, the food was excellent and the fellowship was a wonderful experience."

In conclusion, "homecoming services are generally more joyous than Home going services.  May we strive to greet each other more often in between the services." (GB 101).

(unedited edition)   (Draft 1). Draft 2 and Draft 3 will include at least 2(two) more pages.  Those pages will be published later.
