Mrs. Gladys Price, a long time member and Usher at Warner Baptist, passed away last week.  Her funeral service will be at Warner Baptist on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.

Viewing and expressions to the family will be from 10:00 am until 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.

Tonight will be the third night of Warner Baptist's annual 5 night revival services. The Revivalist this year is Reverend Eugene Pearson, pastor of Mt Pleasant Baptist, Aldie, Virginia.

 Rev. Pearson used Acts 5: 22-39 for his scripture. His topic was "An Unstoppable God."

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Rev Pearson used Galatians 6: 7-10 for scripture reference. His topic was "Keep at it."
The music was provided by a choir from 2nd Baptist, Clifton, VA

He delivered a soul stirring message. Some of the key points of his message were:
 
    a.  Good results from our works and endeavors take time.

    b.  It takes time for good marriages to evolve

    c.  It takes time to raise good children.

    d.  People try to dilute the Word of God. They can't.  (Because it is what it is and they can't change it).

    e.  The harvest is always greater than the seed. 

    f.  Plant good and you will reap good.  Plant evil and you will reap evil.

   g.   Everything we say and do is a seed. So, be careful of what you say and do.

I encourage you to come on out tonight and hear the word for yourself,  So far this week the preacher is in a special zone.  Will I see you tonight?

Thursday, May 16, 2013                             Revival                                        

Music was provided by Warner Baptist Mass Choir
Scripture: II Kings 3: 1 -20     Text:  "Revival through Songs"

The preacher put emphasis on verse 15.  That is the verse where Elisha asked for a musician. But the main point of the whole chapter is how God made a way for water to come for the men and animals when it appeared impossible in the sight of man.  God told Elisha to tell the men to dig ditches, though there were no clouds or sign of rain in sight.  After they dug the ditches, God made it possible for the ditches to be filled with water.

Thus, the men, cattle and animals had water to drink. After drinking the water, they were able to continue on their mission.

Glory be to God. He can make a way.

Friday is the last night.  I recommend that you come on out and hear, what I believe, will be another good message.

Friday, May 17, 2013                                             Revival

Music was provided by the Mt Pleasant Baptist Male Chorus of Aldie, Virginia

Scripture:  Hebrews 12: 1-2    Text:  "Stay in the Race"

The preacher encouraged the congregation to stay focus on Jesus and keep their eyes on the the goal. Eternal life. 
If Jesus was compassionate and forgiving, then the followers must be also.( If you say you want to be like Jesus, then in your daily walk you must do the things (that are within your power) that Jesus did).

He mentioned the hard times our fore parents endured in slavery. Despite it all, they kept their trust in God. (this brief dissertation was good and on a historical date (May 17) in the Civil Rights movement. If you don't know, look it up or ask somebody).

So, as we journey through life, just keep on running and telling somebody about the goodness of God.
Stay in the race! don't give up!

Brionne Goode graduated from Norfolk State University on May 4, 2013

Article 8, Volume 3

Brionne Goode, a member of Warner Baptist Church, graduated from Norfolk State University on Saturday, May 4, 2013 in Norfolk, Virginia.

Brionne majored in Mass Communication.

As a youth she was very active in church.  We are looking forward to her helping the church in its endeavors in the future.

I am especially happy for Brionne.  She just hung in there and did what she had to do to graduate. Her determination to complete the journey should be an inspiration to other potential graduates who just quit along the way and never go back to school. 

She is the daughter of  Trustee Willie (Barry) and Deaconess Sharon Goode.

We congratulate Brionne!

Marco Williams Enlisted in the U.S. Army

Article 7, Volume 3

 Marco Williams, a member of Warner Baptist Church, Falls Church, VA entered the US Army today, May 14, 2013.

Private Marco Williams reported for duty at Fort Jackson, SC.

Marco is an active member of the church. From his early childhood days he has participated in several activities in the church.  He remained active after graduation from high school in 2011.  He has good oratorical and creative writing skills. Both, can be an asset in the military.

Sunday, Mother's Day, Marco was in church, singing with the choir. After church, the choir and some church members gathered around Marco to wish him well, express their love, and let him know that he will be missed.

I am happy for Marco, and along with the church, I will be praying that he has a prosperous and blessed military career.

( I joined the military many years ago and reported to Ft Jackson, SC.  One of the best things I did in my life. I'm still reaping the benefits.)

Death knocked on my door. But the door to my earthly life was bolted by the Love and Grace of God

Death Came Knocking: But the love and Grace of God Allowed me to tarry a while longer

It was early Sunday, April 14th, 2013, I was on my way home.I was wide awake and fully alert. About 2 miles from my office a drunk driver made a quick turn left right in front of my car. I applied my brakes and hollered out to the Lord, "Let me live! let me live! Let me live! Then the impact, I felt as though I died for a few seconds.But when I opened my eyes, I could see the other car on the side of the road. My car had spun around in the center of the road. Both cars were smoking and appeared to be totally demolished.

All I could do was thank the Lord. He heard my cry.  It was the most frightful moment of my life.The Lord heard my cry, and allowed me to tarry a while longer.

To this day I still see that man's car in my windshield.

I am up and about.

I cannot go into details.

But I can say, "To God be the Glory." God is good.  Don't be hesitant to call on the Lord any time, anywhere, because there are some things that happen in our lives that we have absolutely no control of.

In conclusion, I cried out to the Lord, in what could have been my last words, "Let me live! let me live!

The Lord heard my plea, and I am so thankful.

Jesus Last Week Before the Resurrection

Our discussion will be centered on the last week of Jesus time on earth before the cruc.ifixion.  The intent is to raise our awareness of  some of the noted events that occurred.  Also, this discussion might enhance our knowledge about some of the things we already know. For example, did Jesus rise from the grave on a Saturday night or a Sunday morning.

1.  The "Triumphal Entry" of Jesus into Jerusalem

     The significance of the event is underscored by the fact that the circumstance is recorded in all four gospel accounts.  For discussion purposes we will only analyze Matthews account.

2.  The meaning and importance of the Last Supper

    The Last Supper was both a Passover meal and the last meal Jesus had with his apostles before his arrest and crucifixion.

5. The Crucifixion of Jesus

    The shadow of the cross that was raised on Golgotha reaches across the centuries to offer comfort, forgiveness, and hope for us today.  Even with all the pain , Jesus thought of others rather than himself when he was on the cross. His first words from the cross were, "Father, forgive them for they know not what they do".

6. The 7 Last Words of Jesus on the Cross

 You will be given the scripture for these words in class.

     1) Jesus speaks to the Father     (2) Jesus Speaks to the Criminal on the Cross   (3) Jesus Speaks to Mary and John  (4) Jesus Cries Out to the Father  (5) Jesus is Thirsty  (6) It is Finished   (7) Jesus Last Words.  Thus, we have what is often referred to as Jesus last words.

  To be discussed in class.  When was the dawning of the new day, Saturday night or Sunday morning? Read the scripture carefully.

Black History: A history filled with joy, sadness and hope.

Black History

The study of Black History can be inspiring.  In church, it can have a significant role in leading people to understand more about our contributions to the United States. When I get involved in the study of Black History, I experience feelings of joy, sadness and hope. I encourage anybody who study black history to get involved in studying biblical history. If they do that, then black history, and the works of God will be clearer. 

I have lived long enough to have some pretty good expressions about black history in the church, school, neighborhoods and many other facets of life.

Drama Play: "Many Thousand Gone", Presented at Mt Pleasant Baptist, Alexandria, VA on February 3, 2013

                                                                 " Many Thousand Gone"

The play, "Many Thousand Gone" was presented at Mt Pleasant Baptist on February 3, 2013 in the afternoon before an estimated audience of 150. The play was written by the late Sister Effie Harris, a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist.  The presentation on Sunday was under the direction of Sister Aaronita Brown.

She started working on assembling the cast about a year ago and rehearsals started in the Spring of 2012. The cast members came from several churches in the area. (**see cast members below).

The play included several Negro Spirituals, such as, "Hold on to that Dream", "Somewhere around God's Thorn" and "One More River to Cross".

The play was entertaining and amusing at times, but yet filled with the truth about the suffering and roads, we, as Black people, trod to get to where we are today.  Sometimes it is difficult for modern day Black folks to understand that the slaves of yesterday were people just like us today. They had ambitions and dreams of one day being free and able to come and go at their own will and raise their own families without the fear of their children and spouses being sold to another slave owner. They worked hard, prayed, and worshipped God. Although, it was probably difficult for them to understand how come they were enslaved.

But they found hope for a brighter tomorrow, when they were allowed to go to the Master's church, and hear stories from the Old Testament about Moses and the Hebrew children and then listen to sermons and testimonies about Jesus and his many powers.  This exposure was good, even though they couldn't read, they could listen and go back to the plantation and spread the word.

The slaves cried many nights after finding something to laugh about during the day.The tracks of their tears was often evidence that many of them were troubled about something. But through conversation with trusted friends and their belief in God -the God they had heard the White folks talking about at the church - they learned to hold back the tears and continue to look forward to that day when freedom would be theirs.

Through songs and skits we were able to sense how the slaves and disadvantaged felt and feel today.

Many thousand are gone who never personally realized what it is like to be free, but those of us who are their descendants are responsible for keeping their dreams and hopes alive by living and doing what we can to make the world a better place for generations to come.

In summary, it was a wonderful play, and the time devoted to witness the presentation was well spent.

                          1 Samuel: Looking Back at the Path We Have in Studying This Book

Since September 2012 we have been engaged in studying this book page by page, chapter by chapter, all the way through the book. Now it is time to do a cursor review and confirm that we know what we thought we knew. 

This review is not a test. The lowest grade will equal the highest grade and the highest grade will equal the lowest grade. The participation will be verbal, by groups or Side A of the table versus Side B on the other sid of the table.

Warner Baptist afternoon service, Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 3 p.m.

 

Family Talent Service

 

     Church members and their families are invited to display their talent at this service. Some sing, some tell or read Scripture, papers, poems or whatever they feel is interesting or spiritually uplifting. 

 

     I participated, last year. Shortly before the service I wrote a blog titled, "Ain't I Still a Negro." It turned out to be one of my popular writings in 2012.

 

     This year I wrote another blog that I plan to read on Sunday. The title is, "I Ain't Gonna Take Down That Christmas Tree This Year. Gonna Leave It Up Year-Round For Other Celebrations."

    Well, I plan on being there Sunday. How about you?

Men's Ministry Annual Day:Old and New Members Reunite for an outstanding presentation of songs

The Men's Ministry celebrated their *39th Annual Day at Warner Baptist today.

Members of the current men chorus combined with some of the former members to render an outstanding slate of songs and music.

Their selections included some good old hymns that we rarely hear in church today.It was truly " foot stumping, hand slapping time" in there this afternoon.

Their selections included: (1) Blessed Assurance (congregation), (2) The Last Mile of the Way, (Earl Adams), (3) Just ask for what you want, (Stan Bradby), (4) It's Amazing (Lenny Wright), (5) Oh, Holy Night, (instrumental by Gary Walker,), (6) I'm Redeemed (Frank White) (7) My Life is in his Hand ( George Guthrie, Frank White, and Lenny Wright) and (8) Roll back the curtains (Frank).

The worship leader was Deacon Larry Johnson, a member of Christian Way Baptist Church in Falls Church. He did a wonderful job of helping keep the congregation in a hallelujah mode.

Some of the old chorus members who returned were: Mark Ball, Elmore Ball, Frank White, Lenny Wright, George Guthrie, Marvin Somers, and Dejaun Saunders.

The following men were in the chorus today: Mark, Keith, Laurence, Lloyd, Dejaun, Burton, Lenny, Gary, Stan, George (Butch), E. Ball, Guy, Lewis, Earl, Pliney, Marvin,  and Barry. 

The musicians were: Charlene Purdy, Shirley Saunders and Shirley Jones.

The choir was formed in 1973 (my timeline),.  Some of the original members were: Eugene Puryear, Grady Bryant Sr, Lloyd Saunders, Herbert Fuller, Jr and Chester Pearson. 

Chester Pearson was the choir's first president and his wife Leola was the the first musician.

Barry Goode gave a more detailed history of the men's ministry.

Pliney Britford and Barry Goode are the President and Vice President, respectively, of the men's ministry.

*The year is unconfirmed. But 1973 seems more positive to me.

Rev. Darrell K. White, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Alexandria,VA was the guest preacher for Annual Deacon's Day Celebration at Warner Baptist Church

Article 15 Volume 2

The deacons ministry celebrated their annual Deacon's Day today. The guest preacher was Dr. Rev. Darrell White, pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Alexandria, VA. He was accompanied by his church's men chorus and several members.

Rev. White used Philippians Chapter 3 for his primary scripture and his text was titled, "One Thing".

Basically, he encouraged the congregation to focus on being good Christians and other things will come your way. Just focus on one thing.

Deacon Cliff Davis of Ebeneezer Baptist, Alex, VA was the worship leader.

Deacon Michael McCormick of Bethlehem Baptist delivered the message known as, "Remainder to the Deacons." The topic of his presentation was, "Stay Committed to Your Calling".

The men chorus delivered a variety of soul inspiring songs. Their selections included, "It's Praying Time", "It's Good to Know the Lord" and "When the storm is over, I'll be standing". 

Deacon Davis described the chorus presentation of songs as "foot stumping " music.

Deacon Lloyd Saunders, Jr. is chairman of the Warner Baptist deacon board.

Warner Baptist Men' Annual Day,December 2, 2012: The service will feature former and current male chorus and choir members

The Men Ministry of Warner Baptist will celebrate their annual day on Sunday, December 2, 2012 commencing at 3 p.m.

Many men who were chorus and choir members at WBC and have moved out of the area, have made a commitment to return for this special occasion. Some of them will be accompanied by singers or groups from churches where they are currently affiliated.Current male chorus and choir members will also participate.

You can look forward to a variety of soul inspiring songs.

Trustees Pliney Britford and Barrett Goode are the president and vice president, respectively of the men' ministry.  These men have a staunch reputation for organizing and presenting outstanding services and programs.

Women's Ministry Annual Day:Dr. Margaret Payton, guest speaker

Dr. Margaret Payton was the guest speaker for the Women's Annual Day service today, November 11, 2012.  She is  a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Washington, D. C.

Dr. Payton message was centered on unity.

The guest worship leader was Deaconess Joan Henry of Macedonia Baptist Church.

A memorial tribute was read by Sister Gwen Haight in remembrance of six members who passed away in the pass 12 months. The six were: Dorothy Adams; Thelma Jordan; Harriet Shields; Annie Lee Holland-Joe; Mashiya Pollard and Rose Mae Smith.
