We invite you and/or your family to our Vacation Bible School, 20-24 June 2016 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

You will learn about "Deep Sea Discovery - God will be with me wherever I go."

Our classes will include bible teaching from the Kings James version, crafts, music, and games.

We will serve snacks.

We believe you will find our classes spiritually rewarding, and have fun too.

So come and join us. We will have classes for all ages.

Warner Baptist Annual Ushers Day Service
P.M. Service

Warner Baptist celebrated its Annual Ushers Day on Sunday, June 5, 2016. The guest Preacher for the service was Rev. Donald Hayes, pastor of Oakland Baptist Church, Alexandria, Virginia. He used scripture from the New Testament.  His message was centered on being a person willing to serve and help people for the uplifting of God's kingdom.

He was accompanied by one of his church's choirs and members of the Ushers Ministry.

There was a moment of silence, during the service, in remembrance of Sister Mamie Morgan who passed away in May 2016. She was a long time member of the Ushers Ministry at Warner Baptist and Ebenezer Baptist in Alexandria, Virginia.

An estimated 105 Ushers from the Northern Virginia area were present to support and show their love for the Warner Baptist Ushers ministry. Also, our visitors included several none ushers.

We were treated to the highly acclaimed March of the Northern Virginia Ushers.

The food ministry under the leadership of Deaconess Shirley Saunders prepared and served a 
very delicious meal.  The chicken was finger licking good.

Annual Ushers Day Service

Warner Baptist Church Ushers Ministry will celebrate its annual day on Sunday, June 5, 2016.  Reverend Donald Hayes, pastor of Oakland Baptist Church in Alexandria, VA will be the guest preacher.  The service is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

We are anticipating several visiting Ushers to be present.

If you arrive early and feel hungry, we promise that if you leave hungry, it will probably be by choice.

Deaconess Inez Addison, president of this illustrious ministry, invites you to come and celebrate with them.

Warner Baptist Black History Service: Featured Minister Isaac Howard and the Mt Calvery Baptist, Fairfax, Combined Gospel Choir

                Afternoon service featured an array of old gospel hymns

Reverened Howard kept the congregation in a more! more! mode the whole service, as the choir sung hymns that you just don't hear that much in churches today. Songs such as "Lead Me all the way", " Saved by the blood of Jesus". Michelle Payne really song a beautiful selection, and to make sure the congregation stayed alert, she was followed by Sister (need help with name) who really had the congregation clapping and stomping like days of old.

The choir was in sinc all the way through the service.

Anyway, it was an afternoon well spent.

The Warner Baptist culinary ministry prepared and served a wonderful, delicious meal.

Janice Somers, a retired teacher, treated us to some wonderful readings and poems.

Can't tell it all, but I want you to know, we had a good time giving praises to the Lord in songs,  readings and prayer.

Reverend Stanley Bradby delivers timely Dr.Martin Luther King Jr Birthday message at Warner Baptist Church

Rev Stanley Bradby is an assistant to the pastor at Warner Baptist. He preached at the 11a.m. service on Sunday, January 17, 2016.  The topic for his sermon was:

Are You a Willing Worker?

The scripture for the text is found in Nehemiah Chapter 4. Its emphasis was on the Jews building the walls in Jerusalem after they were set free. This job required a lot of work.When the Jews saw how much work would be required some of them made it clear that they were not up to the task. Some of the them were discouraged by the enemies.  But Nehemiah had a mind to work. So he called for all "Willing Workers" to sign up for the task. He did not want workers who would be complaining about how hard they would have to work.

Enough men, and women (to some degree) banded together to build the wall.  Enemies confronted them and used a variety of tactics to make them give up. The Bible says that they prayed and prayed and turned the problems over to God and kept on working.  They worked by shifts, and some men had to bear arms while the others worked.  In the end, they finished the mission.

The interesting point is they prayed and voluntarily and willingly worked on the walls until they finished.

What does all of this have to do with Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday?

Dr. King was in the forefront in a lot of his missions.  But in order to be successful he had to have hundreds of willing workers to contribute their time, knowledge, finance, and labor to the many tasks he was put in the forefront to complete.

Our history books tell us that he was in demand all over the world.  He covered as much ground as he could but it was impossible for him to do all that was expected of him.

When Dr. King spoke in Suffolk, Virginia on June 28, 1963, to a crowd over 7,500, I believe more than 100 willing workers banded together to see that everything went smooth.  The willing workers included Julia Porter, a rising senior at East Suffolk High and many other students who served as ushers.  See: esh60.blogspot.com/2013/08/ 

The described principles apply when it comes to doing work for the uplifting of God's Name, churches, and other volunteer organizations.  If you are called on to assist or lead a particular project and you don't have time to do it because your plate is already full, tell the requester in a gentle way, that you just can't do it because of your tight schedule. He or she should understand.

Also, if you have time, but just don't want to do it, let it be known.

Most black churches, I believe, were built on men and women willingly sacrificing their time to voluntarily work on all kinds of missions.

Now, the tie down.

I believe that Dr. King was sent by God to go down in the valley and work with and for the poor people, and God inspired thousands of people to voluntarily contribute whatever resources and time to the missions spearheaded by Dr. King. 

I only met Dr. King in person one time, in Washington, DC in 1965. It was a simple handshake and exchange of a few words after he had completed a speech at a local venue. It was not considered a big deal at the time. But looking back, I do treasure that brief encounter. It was inspiring. Also, I can personally testify about how much his work depended on "Willing Workers".

Rev. Stan Bradby was right on key in his, not meant for, but spirit guided, message on the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and the help and assistance he received from thousands of willing workers.

Warner Baptist Celebrates its 95th Anniversary and Pastor Matthew Pearson's 50th as a Pastor

Warner Baptist Celebrates

Warner Baptist concluded its week long 95th anniversary celebration, today, with a banquet at the Waterford in Fairfax,Virginia.The celebration included recognition of Pastor Matthew J. Pearson for serving a total of fifty years as a pastor of two churches.

An estimated 200 patrons attended the gala.

The audience was entertained with music, singing, speakers, good food and anything that happened, but is not mentioned herein.

We had a wonderful morning service.  Pastor, Rev. Matthew J. Pearson preached and the combined choirs sung.

After am service, a delicious meal was served in the dining area downstairs.

As usual, the Kitchen Ministry was superb.

Warner Baptist Church members will celebrate the church's Homecoming Day on July 12, 2015

Warner Baptist Homecoming Day

Homecoming Day is a joyous occasion at Warner Baptist.  Many former members, families, friends and whosoever will come out and celebrate with Warner Baptist members.

The pastor, Rev. Matthew Pearson, I believe, will render the message in the morning service.

Rev. William Swan, pastor of First Ashville Baptist Church in Marshall, Virginia will be the guest preacher in the afternoon service.

He will be accompanied by members of his church.

Food will be served between the services.

I am looking forward to being there and greeting some of my old friends and having a wonderful day in rendering praises and thanks to God for his blessings.

Conclusion: Homecoming services are generally more joyous than home going services.  So, let us strive to greet each other more often between the services. (Grady's collection of Thoughts 101).

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

Vacation Bible School ended Friday night, June 26, 2015 at Warner Baptist Church.

Attendees included students ranging in ages from one year plus to ninety plus.

There was a different theme for classes each night.

The key word for classes, sequentially, Monday through Friday, were: Incredible; Faithful; Invincible; Unconditional and Real.

This is our youngest attending, Victoria.

Public Speaking Requires Continuous Practice

I have been practicing public speaking for over 50 years and I still need to keep on practicing.

In high school, I was considered by teachers and classmates to be one of the best orators in the region.  I had a gift for creating phrases on the spot and making attention capturing oral presentations.  

While still a student in high school, this gift encouraged me to write a weekly column for two local newspapers plus more articles during the week.

In writing, you have time to change your expressions.  In speaking, that is not always the case.

But let me come back to me later.  I'm going to share an incident involving an innocent little eight- year- old country bred and raised girl, named Rehola.  One day she was outside playing with 6 other children.  They were  having a good time playing together.

Out of the blue, she asked one of the boys if he was gay.  after she asked, all the kids ran in the house and left her alone. They told the parents inside what Rehola had said.  Everyone was astonished that she would ask such a question.

So, Rehola's father and two other parents went outside to question her. She was still sitting at the table with the games and toys wondering what all the commotion was about.

Her father asked her if she had asked Bardolis if he was gay.  She replied, "Everybody appeared to be having a good time so I asked him if he was HAPPY?"

One of the children who had witnessed the event, said, "No, you asked him if he was gay?"

Rehola answered, "Well, yes, GAY and HAPPY mean the same thing. That's what we learned in school."

She was completely unaware of any other meaning or thought for the word.

The parents looked at each other, kept their mouths shut and went on back in the house.

The children resumed playing and Rehola was in the midst.  They all appeared to be gay.

But if you in the city, you better say, HAPPY!

Everybody present, learned something that day.  

Meanwhile, back to me.

I was invited to speak to a Bible Study group that included about 70 percent women. The topic was about Rahab.  I pointed out that she was good at her trade as well as showing love for her family.

The favor she did for the two spies (Exodus Chapter 2) led to the liberation of her family.  She negotiated to get this assurance from the two spies.

Well, I had some time left on the clock, so I told the story of Tamar, who was Judah's daughter-in-law.  She was a smart person.  She was able to get something from Judah that was more important than money.  In fact it saved her life ( Read Genesis).

So, when I considered the action of several women in the Bible, I stated that women are not dumb.

The class suddenly got quiet. Then almost in unison, they said that of course, women are not dumb.

Well, I mused, I said the right thing, but I said it the wrong way.

If I would have said that women are smart ( opposite of dumb) the reception would have been different.

See, it is not always what you say, instead it is how you say it.

The good news is they all understood my point. 

Well, that's part of practicing public speaking, and after all these years, I'll just keep on practicing.

Be safe. If you have to travel be careful.  The roads may not be as safe as they look.

Don't know what you have to do today.  But before you get on the road, determine if whatever it is you plan to do today is a MUST for today.
